Design Art

"Walking Liberty" was designed by master engraver Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty walking in the morning sun, wearing the Stars and Stripes and holding an olive branch, symbolizing peace and hope; the reverse shows an eagle standing on a rock, symbolizing perseverance, strength and the spirit of freedom.

This coin is also the design prototype of the modern American Silver Eagle coin, and is known as "one of the most beautiful silver coins."
